If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- Take Arden Wy west, then turn left onto Watt Ave. Turn right onto Northrop Ave, then left onto Fulton Ave. Follow the bend around until the road merges into Fair Oaks Blvd. Turn left onto University Ave, then right onto Scripps Dr. We’re in the building on the corner with Fullerton Ct, at 3 Scripps Dr #200.
- Take the Alta Arden Expy west out of Arden-Arcade, then turn left onto Fulton Ave. From there, continue the same as in the first set of directions.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Arden-Arcade’s rich history begins with the Nisenan people, the area’s first inhabitants, who had a distinct language, culture, and social structure. The land later became part of Rancho del Paso, a Mexican land grant initially deeded to John Sutter. Ownership changed hands several times, with James Ben Ali Haggin playing a notable role from 1862 to 1905. Haggin gained fame for breeding racehorses on the Rancho, including Ben Ali, the 1886 Kentucky Derby winner. To support his horse breeding operation, Haggin built a railroad spur and extensive barns near what is now Arcade Boulevard, shipping horses across the country and even internationally.
The name “Arden” likely traces back to Orlando Robertson, a developer from Arden Hills, Minnesota, who purchased the Rancho in 1905. “Arcade” refers to the arching limbs of native oak trees near Haggin’s headquarters, a picturesque spot that gave the area its distinctive name. Robertson developed the land into residential tracts, choosing street names like Watt and Edison to honor famous inventors. By 1916, Arden-Arcade had become a thriving farming community, known for citrus, olives, nuts, and stone fruits, and was once a leading hop-growing region.
Landmarks like Arden Middle School (built in 1914) and the Del Paso Country Club (established in 1919) stand as reminders of the area’s early growth. While residential development began in the 1920s and 1930s, Arden-Arcade’s major building boom occurred after World War II, shaping it into the vibrant, mid-century modern community seen today. The area also features notable googie architecture and blends historic charm with suburban convenience, reflecting its dynamic past and continued evolution.
